39th Annual Award for Excellence in Flute Performance

Auditions held Saturday, April 20, 2024 from 8:30 to 11:30 A.M. at Friends University, Alumni Auditorium in the Davis Building.

Recital and presentation of awards will be held at 11:30 A.M. in Alumni Auditorium. Time subject to change based on number of entrants.

Terms and Conditions

  1. AWARD: The winner of the AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE will be awarded the Betty Hensley First Place Certificate and a cash prize of $200.00. Second Place will receive a certificate and a cash prize of $100.00. Third Place will receive a certificate and a cash prize of $50.00.  Certificates of honorable mention will be awarded at the judges’ discretion.
  2. ELIGIBILITY: Anyone presently in the 9th – 12th grade, who resides in Sedgwick County or one of the contiguous counties (Reno, Butler, Sumner, Harvey, Kingman, or Cowley), is eligible to audition.
  3. APPLICATION FEE: A fee of $15.00 will be paid on the website after registering online.  This fee will not be refunded if the contestant fails to audition.
  4. APPLICATION DEADLINE: Online applications close on April 6, 2024. We will notify you of your performance time through your email address provided below approximately one week prior to the competition.  Should the number of applicants exceed the amount of audition times; applications will be prioritized in the order they were submitted. Applications MUST include their accompanist’s name in order to be entered in the competition.
  5. AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:
    1. Length – approximately 10 minutes
    2. Repertoire chosen by flutist – One work from the standard flute repertoire for flute and piano (no unaccompanied works). Multiple movement work need not include all movements. This piece must be performed with piano accompaniment. Memorization is encouraged but not required.
    3. Required Repertoire: Etude in F Major by Kohler. This etude can be found in the “Selected Studies” book published by Voxman – page 10. Play from the beginning to the f at the end of the 4th line. Then cut to the “un poco animato” and play until the f natural at the end of the 3rd to last line. (Play from the beginning to the f natural in measure 16. Cut to measure 24 and play until the f natural in measure 37) Memorization is not required. (Photocopies will NOT be allowed.)
    4. Contestants must arrange for their own accompanist.
    5. One copy of the solo chosen by the flutist must be provided for the judges. No unauthorized copies of copyrighted material will be accepted. All music used by flutists, pianists, and judges music must be original, and cannot be copied.
